Mary Nowlan, born 24-Jul-1836, was one of 4 daughters from the first marriage of a James Nowlan (c1790) of Freshford, Co. Kilkenny, to a Mary Brennan. Around 1856, she emigrated to Australia and settled at Robe, South Australia. She first married a Charles Frederick TANNER on 26-Jan-1862 but, within 4 weeks, she was a widow, her husband being killed as a result of falling from a horse. She was pregnant at the time and 8 months later she gave birth to a daughter, Margaret. For about 5 years she was a single mother until she met and married Otto DOPKING, a butcher, on 6-Mar-1867 in St Peters Church, Robe, South Australia. Margaret, her daughter from her first marriage, married a James HUMPHREY.

In 1876, 3 step-brothers from a third marriage of her father to an Ellen Dowling in 1847 joined her in Australia sailing from London on the ship Gauntleton 18-Sep-1875 and arriving in Moreton Bay sometime in January/February 1876. James Stephen got off at Robe before reaching the ship’s final destination. Stephen Patrick may also have gotten off at Robe but ultimately made his way to Queenland. A third brother, Edward James appears to have alighted at Brisbane.
