1681 – Slovenia – Thomas & Eva Noulan
Early Days in Slovenia
In 1681, a son named “Joanes Noulan” was born to a “Thomas Noulan” and his wife Eva in “Velika Loka, Višnja Gora”, Slovenia. It is not known if “Joanes Noulan” had any descendants but a “Janez (Joannes) Noulan born June 16 1813 in “Slivnica 27, Kopanj”, Slovenia, may be descended from him. Further research would be required to establish the linkage back to him.
In 1685, in the same area, a second son, named “Luka Noulan“, was born to the couple .
On November 6, 1719, “Luka Noulan” married “Maruša Zupančič”. They had at least 6 children:
- Andrej Andreas Noulan (1720 – ??)
- Jože Joseph Noulan (1726 – ??)
- Martin Noulan (1728- ??)
- Jurij Georgius Noulan (1732 – ??)
- Antonius Noulan (1735 – 1824) who married Jera Matiašič and had at least 3 children:
- Joseph Noulan (1789 – 1827)
- Antonius Noulan (1791 – ?)
- Thomas Noulan (1796 – ??).
Third Generation in Slovenia
Joseph Noulan (1789 – 1827) married Maria “Mica” Janežič and had a son:
- Ivan Novljan (1813 – 1892)
Antonius Noulan (“Novljan”) (1791 – ??) may be the one who married Antonia Maurović and had a daughter, late in life, in neighbouring Croatia i.e.
- Maria Novljan (1849 – ??) who was born in 1849 in Boljun, Općina Lupoglav, Istria County, Croatia and subsequently married a Gersin.
Thomas Noulan (1796 – ??) married Margaretha Berlan in 1835 and they had a son:
- Johann Noulan (“Novljan”) married Maria Škufca in 1870 and they do not seem to have had any children.

RN Comments
The first name Luke has a long-standing association with the Shangarry branch of Nolans in county Carlow and more recently with a derivative branch associated with the Templepeter townland. Y-DNA testing for this Slovenian line of Nolans may help to establish a link to the Shangarry line of Nolans with origins in county Carlow.
Known spelling variations for this family line include, Noulan, Novlan and Novljan. The “Noulan” variation originated in France and was used by Nolans in France serving in the Irish Brigades. Quite simply, in French, “Noulan” most closely approximates the Gaelic pronunciation for Nuallain.
