1844 : Martin Nolan : Virginia, USA

Children: Daniel(1844), Michael B.(1846), Margaret(1852), Martin(1856), James(1856) and Mary (1858)

Martin and Mary were both born in Galway, Ireland, and may have married there before emigrating sometime before 1844 when their first child, Daniel, was born in Virginia. They settled in Virginia and are known to have had 13 children, 11 of whom survived to adulthood.

As a young man, Martin and Mary’s eldest son, Daniel, moved to Locaconing, Maryland, where he lived out the rest of his life. In 1867 he married Catherine Naughton, a young Irish girl born in Ireland in May 1849, daughter of a Patrick and Susan/Sarah/Hilary Naughton. Daniel died in Allegany county, Maryland, on 17 Jan 1917.

In Maryland, Daniel and his wife had at least two sons, namely Martin and Patrick, who married sisters, Margaret and Cecelia Chambers. Sometime after their marriage, Patrick and Margaret relocated to Connecticut.

1848 : James F. Nolan : Richmond, VA

James F. Nowlan, a stonemason by trade, emigrated from Ireland around 1848, first settling in Richmond, Virginia. His parents are believed to have been a Thomas Nowlan, born in County Wexford, and a Sarah Gilbert, born in County Antrim.

On June 17, 1862, in St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Richmond, Virginia, James married Margaret Redmond. After their marriage and before moving on, the couple lived in a boarding house run by James’ mother-in-law, Mary Cullen. According to family tradition, one of James and Margaret’s children, Edward Jerome, dropped the “w” from the family name after he got tired of people mispronouncing his name.

1856 : David Nowlan : Virginia

Children: Ben (c1856), Abe, John and Calahan

David and Katherine’s first son, Ben Nowlan, was born in Virgina. After spending some time in North Dakota, around 1903, Ben went on to the province of Saskatchewan in Canada. Ben’s three other brothers supposedly settled in Manitoba, two of them changing their family name to Bennett, for some unknown reason.
