Below are listed outstanding requests for assistance which I have been received since 2024 and which will be acted upon as time permits. However, for the future, I would ask that requests for assistance in resolving Nolan family brick walls be submitted via a new online NolanFamilies Research Group (https://groups.io/g/nolanfamilies) which I created specifically for that purpose.

Roger: Your information on the Iowa page for Daniel E. “Nowlan” is incorrect, as that is my great-great-grandfather! 🙂 I have all of the information but it is a LARGE book and I work full time so don’t have time to transcribe it. I have a John Nolan that came over about the same time frame as the one in the post. My John Nolan came in through Philadelphia. He also ended up in Spring Field I’ll. Some of the clan went to Kansas as well. Junction City Kansas. Wm. B. Nolan I, II, III. From that they had 6 children and those 6 had 33-35 kids.

I have recently made a break through because of DNA links and I wanted to get that information into your database. What research that was done with my family says we either originated or wound up in Bird Hill, County Tipperary with perhaps other family members either originally or winding up in County Carlow. My Great, great grandparents were born in rural Livingston County. Illinois (USA) while great aunts and uncles lived around Morris. Illinois (USA) all with rural, agricultural and small town backgrounds. Just looking for confirmation that our dispora from Ireland began from which County and if I can trace family history further than the 1800s. Thank you.

Y dna testing says part from Connachti and part from Leinster. My great grandfather, Patrick Nolen seems to have been from Carlow as well as great grandmother Margaret Carnahan…they immigrated to the USA. Could it be that lineage began in Connachti…Saw something about Galway?

Hi Roger, The clan membership application link is broken. I have an old paper form but am not sure how accurate the information is. It lists Pa Nolan as the clan treasurer with a Dublin Address with an annual fee of 10 Euros. I believe it is now 25. Please advise if you have current information. BTW I live in both the US and Canada. My Canadian residence is in Welland. It would be great to share a lunch with you when I pass through the Ottawa Gatineau region this summer. Texas story: My paternal 2nd great grandfather, William Gerald Nolan, was born in Dublin, Ireland about Nov 1818 and probably baptized on the 9 Dec 1818 in St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral to parents Francis Nolan and wife Margaret with witnesses John Epsom and Mary Casey – they were residents of the George Street Barracks. He attended the Catholic College of Carlow (St. Patrick’s College) and graduated from Trinity College thence admitted to the Bar in Dublin. He arrived in Mississippi in 1841 where he practiced law; early 1850s came to Texas.

Hello, my name is Randy Funkhouser and I live in a little town in southern Illinois called Grayville. I am the youngest of 12 children. I am 72 years old and my mother is Gertrude Aline Nolan ( 1917-2002 ). Her father is Hershell Thomas Nolan ( 1892-1971 ). His father is David M Nolan ( 1863-1943 ). I believe that his father is George W Noland ( 1838-1863 ). And possibly his father is John B Noland ( about 1796- ? ), maybe born in North Carolina. According to Ancestry.com my DNA is 45% Central Scotland & Northern Ireland and 2% Connacht.

My family (Kane)are originally from Co Carlow and ?? before that, they moved across the county boundary to Castledermot, Co Kildare, where they still are and later to Moone, Co Kildare. My Mother Jane (rip) was born in Moone. I do a lot of research in County Kerry and their descendants wherever they live and now catching up on the Kane family. My 5 sisters and I are planning an Ireland holiday and would like to trace our great grandmother Margaret Nolan who hails from County Meath. She married Great grandfather Rafferty supposedly hailing from a nearby County and moved to England They then went to India with the Army. After his death and the death of her son James ( died on Armistice day.) My grandmother Eleanor Celestine Rafferty married my grandfather Horace Thompson an Australian soldier and they all emigrated to Australia. I would appreciate an insight as to the most promising path to identify any relatives still in Ireland.

Hello Rodger my great grandfather was John Nolan from Tomard Leighlinbridge he had at least two daughters Ellen and Mary. Ellen married Michael Delaney in 1871 in st Marys Kilkenny. Her father John Nolan was dead at this time; he was a shoemaker. I have no other details about him but Ellen’s first child named Ellen was born in Tomard. Would you have any information on John or could you put me in touch with anyone who might have information on his family.It would be of great help to me in finding my Nolan family.

Hello! I’ve traced my paternal last name “Noling” all the way back to a “Uriah Peter Phillip Noland” of Ireland, he would’ve migrated around 1760-1780 the records are really hazy. It says he had a son “James Noling” and they lived in Ohio, and were both born in Ireland. Do you have any info on him? Was he likely of Nolan descendance? I think it’s an interesting story! Hello Roger, Christopher Nolan suggested that I contact you. My wife is a Noland, descended from Pierce Nowlan. I’m researching our son’s family tree and trying to sort out where her line comes from. I bought the Nolan book and don’t see any connections in there. I see many family trees online that list Pierce’s father as Thomas Nowlan and then continue a line to Awly O’Nuallain but I have also read that this is completely bogus. I’ve read that the DNA tests locate Pierce Nowlan in western Ireland, whereas the O’Nuallain folks came from Carlow, and that the two have no connection.

Hello Roger, I just recently (to the best of my ability and knowledge) completed by full family history beginning at my great-great grandmother Mrs Cora Nowlin and ending at Adam (the fist man). I was pleased to finally piece together some the missing family after about the 1500’s. It appears my patriarchal lineage goes through Conn Cedelach (Conn of the Hundred Battles) who a brother of Eochaidh Fiona Foharta.

Hi Roger! Having just visited Galway recently to see the remains of Carrowbrowne Castle where my 14th and 15th x great grandfather lived I learned a lot talking to the landed estates Dept of Galway University and to the eminent archaeologist Rory Sherlock. However I discovered from my own research that the original castle was built by David Le Brun a 13th century grandson of the first Norman Chancellor in Ireland.

However what I would like to know for my family tree is who was the father and maybe grandfather of Donell Oge O Hualachain?

I’m from Stratford Ontario. I hope you can solve a family brick wall that has been bugging our family for years. I have a Peter Nolan born about 1816 Ireland. He married about 1831 Ireland to a Mary Whitigan born about 1811 Ireland. They had a daughter Jane born March 3 1832 Leinster, Co.Killkenny,Ireland she married my ancestor John E. Morris Sept.1847 Leinster,Ireland.

Peter lived in St.Marys, Ontario and was a farmer.Nobody knows where Peter & Mary are buried. Jane Morris nee Nolan died November 30 1923 Harrington,ON. John and Jane Morris had 10 children.

John Nolan made ocean voyage to Springfield IL. [It is possible that John took the immigrant ship “Columbus” sailing from Liverpool on February 17, 1851, bound for New York via Fayal in the Azores, listed as passsenger #227.]

[John] sent back to Ireland for his betrothed Marya Sheehan [who experienced a] rough perilous six-month ocean crossing.

[John and Marya] had 7 children [all born in Springfield, IL]: James H., Nellie, Maria, Lucy, John, Peter and Kathryn.

John H., [John’s son] [initially] worked for his uncle Pat Sheehan in Kansas as Livestock farmer [and upon his return he] bought land and tended bar in Morrisonville.

Show more detailsI have been searching for over 20 years for my great great grandfather’s parents in Ireland. My issue is that when my great great grandfather came to America he claims he was a stowaway. I hear that is a story of a lot of irishmen. I do not know when he came over. I do not know what ship, where he left from, or where he landed in America. I believe he landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania due to his settling quickly in Georgia. He made it to South Georgia before the American Civil War, could have naturalized when he entered the war but the records are burned, along with all of his records.
