In the early 1800s, Lawrence Nowland, born about 1785, worked as a seaman aboard the Honourable East India Company ship “Winchelsea”. In early 1811 he fell sick or was injured and had to be hospitalized on the island of St. Helena, a point along the companies trade route to India.

Lawrence did not recover and a short time later died, being buried in the St James Churchyard on 2 June 1811. Following is the link to the St Helena St James church register containing the burial entry for Lawrence Nowland dated 2 June 1811.
